China's Cities to Receive Massive InfluxPublished: 26 Aug 2009 20:48:19 PST<p class="authorInfor"]</p]<P]Some 300 million Chinese now living in rural areas -- the equivalent of the entire population of the United States -- will move into cities in the coming 15 to 20 years, said a senior Chinese official Wednesday.</P]<P]The fast pace of urbanization will create at least 1 trillion yuan in annual investment opportunities in building water supply, waste treatment, heating and other public utilities in the cities, said Xu Zhongwei, deputy policy director of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.</P]<P]"Such a big urban population will result in huge market demand," Xu told China Daily Wednesday.</P]<P]China is undergoing rapid urbanization, with its rate increasing from 17 percent 30 years ago to 45 percent at the end of year, Xu said. More than 600 million of China's 1.3 billion people already live in cities.</P]<P]"This is an incredible speed and I am quite proud that we didn't see a huge increase of slums in the cities during the process," Xu said.</P]<P]In contrast, urbanization in other transitional economies, such as India, Brazil and South Africa, resulted in many slum areas.</P]<P]China's urbanization rate will increase by nearly 1 percent annually during the coming 15 to 20 years, which means that China will urbanize 300 million rural people during the period, Xu said.</P]<P]However, compared with international average standards, Chinese cities are extremely dense, Xu said.</P]<P]Statistics have shown that the population count per square kilometer in central parts of Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing has surpassed 50,000 to 60,000. The world's average per square kilometer stands at just 10,000. Currently, the Chinese government's plans call for 120 square meters of living space per person, taking into account all aspects of life, such as housing, parks, roads, schools and other public utilities.</P]<P]"The standard is too low and I personally believe we should double the standards and decrease density of cities," said Xu.</P]<P]The cities in China just cover 80,000 square kilometers of land in the country and if it the standard is doubled, it will be increased to 160,000 square kilometers.</P]<P]At the same time, the government is implementing tough policies to protect arable land and taking cautious steps to expand cities.</P]<P]"We need a balanced policy to prevent people from living a poor urban life in high-rise buildings," said Xu. As demand for automobiles continues to surge, BMW announced Thursday that it would increase investment in its Chinese joint venture, BMW Brilliance Automotive, in order to expand production capacity to 300,000 units.</p]
Construction on the new plant, to be located in Shenyang, will begin in 2010, with BMW and Brilliance splitting the 5 billion yuan ($732.43 million) investment down the middle.</p]
Friedrich Eichiner, member of the board of BMW AG, told a press conference announcing the move that the new plan demonstrates the importance that his company places on the Chinese market.</p]
While sales worldwide declined 14 percent from January to October, BMW and Mini together saw sales rise 36.7 percent in China over the same period. Last year BMW delivered over 65,000 BMW and Mini cars to China.</p]
Although BMW has been producing vehicles in China with its joint venture for five years, BMW Brilliance admitted recently that its plant could not keep up with demand.</p]
The plant sold 35,163 units in 2008 and 27,631 in the first eight months of the year. BMW Brilliance is planning to produce more than 40,000 units in 2010.</p]
Eichiner said BMW would continue to make BMW 3 Series and 5 Series at the original plant, but was uncertain about which models the new factory would produce.</p]
Eichiner added BMW Brilliance would launch a series of cars next year developed specifically for China.</p]
Sun Lihong, market analyst with auto consulting company CSM China, said that the increased capacity will open up greater possibilities for expanding product lines.</p]
&quot;The SUV products, X1 and X3 may be ideal models to be launched in China. Replacement demand for SUV shows potential,&quot; said Sun.</p]
Brilliance has high expectations for future collaborations with BMW.</p]
&quot;The event today shows that the cooperation between BMW Group and Brilliance Group is entering a new stage,&quot; said Qi Yumin, chairman of Brilliance Auto Group, Brilliance China's parent.</p]
BMW's expansion comes on the heels of other foreign automakers looking to gain a stronger foothold in China.</p]
Audi, which is producing two models at its Changchun-based joint venture First Automobile Works, is preparing for the production of a mid-size luxury crossover SUV Audi Q5 tailored to the Chinese market.</p]
Johannes Thammer, president of Audi Sales Division with FAW-Volkswagen, said that the largest high-end automaker by market share is planning to expand to more than 200 dealerships in China in over 100 cities by 2012 from the present 146 in 89 cities.</p]
Mercedes-Benz is also getting into the mix. The auto powerhouse unveiled 14 new models recently and has plans to launch more in the coming months. Due to high demand, it will move production of the E-class luxury sedan to China next year.</p]<p align=center] Explore the World, Understand China!

Dec. 23, 2008 (China Knowledge) - China plans to launch a series of polices in the coming new year to revive nine industries heavily stricken by the further-spreading global financial crisis, Li Yizhong, the Minister of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said last Friday.</p]
The nine industries, including light industry, textile, steel, non-ferrous metal, automobile, petrochemical, ship-making, electronics and telecommunications, will receive support from the central government.</p]
More tariff and trade policies will be launched soon to encourage export of labor-intensive and hi-tech industries, and the government will also support the M&amp;A activities of Chinese enterprises, said Li.</p]
He also noted other favorable policies, including value-added tax reform, financial support for technological innovation, expanded bank loans for SMEs and government procurement and reserve of major raw materials.</p]

Tianjin airport to build new runway for test flights of A320Published: 23 Oct 2008 22:20:04 PST<p class="authorInfor"]</p]<P]Binhai international airport in Tianjin is to build a new runway for test flights of the Airbus A320. </P]<P]The second runway will be 3,200 meters long and 45 meters wide. The cost has not disclosed. The project will be ready for service on May 1 next year, according to the airport authorities. </P]<P]An assembly line for European aircraft maker Airbus A320 planes began construction in May 2007 in Tianjin. </P]<P]Construction of a third runway will also begin at an opportune time to meet three needs: to test fly A320 planes, to meet expected growth in air travel, and to act as a reserve airport to the Capital International Airport in Beijing. </P]<P]The assembly plant is a joint venture between Airbus and Tianjin Zhongtian Aviation Industry Investment Co., a Chinese alliance of China Aviation Industry Corp I, China Aviation Industry Corp II and Tianjin Bonded Zone Investment Co. </P]<P]Airbus holds a majority 51 percent stake in the Tianjin assembly facility, with the rest held by Tianjin Zhongtian Aviation Industry Investment Co. </P]<P]The assembly line project, with an estimated investment of 8 billion to 10 billion yuan (1.04 to 1.3 billion U.S. dollars), includes assembly workshops, power stations, hangars and outdoor facilities. </P]<P]Based in the Tianjin Binhai New Area, the first for Airbus outside Europe, the plant is expected to start operating this month and have an annual capacity of assembling 44 aircraft by 2011, sources with the project said. </P]<P]The first plane will roll off the production line next May.

The company said that Siemens plans has asked it to supply steam turbines, power generators and power station auxiliary equipment during the next four years.

Industry insiders said that the order transfer is an important strategy adjustment to reduce operating costs. Siemens declined to comment.

Shanghai Electric said that the cooperation with Siemens is a golden opportunity to enter the high-end market for electrical equipment.

The company targets RMB 20 billion in overseas orders this year, and said that overseas orders are expected to surge from 2009 to 2011.

As of the end of 2008, the company had received RMB 160 billion in orders in the power equipment sector and RMB 17 billion in orders in the heavy industrial equipment sector.

Nov. 14, 2008 (China Knowledge) - China's urban fixed asset investment rose 27.2% year-on-year to RMB 11.32 trillion in the first ten months of this year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Friday.</p]
Of the total, fixed-asset investment in state-owned or state-funded enterprises reached RMB 4.71 trillion, up 21.3% over the same period a year ago. And RMB 2.39 trillion were invested in the real estate sector, a year-on-year increase of 24.6%.</p]
The statistics also showed investment in projects invested by the central government and local government climbed 28.7% and 27.1% from a year earlier to RMB 1.1365 trillion and RMB 10.1824 trillion respectively.</p]
Investment in the primary, secondary and tertiary industry reached RMB 173.2 billion, RMB 5.0759 trillion and RMB 6.0698 trillion, representing a year-on-year increase of 61.8%, 30% and 24.3%, respectively.</p]
In terms of industries, investment in mining and ore washing rose 41% to RMB 177.3 billion, and that in production and supply of electric power and heat power was RMB 697.9 billion, up 16% over the same period of last year.</p]

The spokesman also cited Carrefour's CEO Lars Olofsson that the company is optimistic about China' economy and thinks highly of the potential for Chinese market.</P]<P]The company said it had not changed its strategic plans to open 20 to 25 new outlets in China each year, and its board of directors was fully supportive, according to the English-language newspaper.</P]<P]French daily Le Monde earlier reported that Carrefour was planning to sell its operations in emerging markets like Latin America and Asia as its top shareholders required due to investment losses.</P]<P]Officials from Carrrefour's headquarters, however, did not directly comment on whether top shareholders would sell their interests in China or not, said the newspaper.</P]<P]Reportedly, Wal-Mart and Taiwan-based RT-Mart International Ltd have both exceeded Carrefour in terms of total store numbers and single store sales revenue in China.<BR]</P]

Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), one of the country's main aircraft producers, announced Wednesday that one of its subsidiaries, Xi'an Aircraft Industry (Group) Company (XAIC), will set up two joint ventures with Goodrich Corporation, the world's largest aircraft component supplier.</p]
The two joint ventures will mainly produce nacelle and landing gear systems, and their customers will include Boeing, Airbus UK and Bombardier. The nacelle JV will also be the first commercial aircraft nacelle producer in China.</p]
AVIC and Goodrich will each hold 50 percent of the two joint ventures.</p]
Details about the investment of both sides will be disclosed in a future notice, said Meng Xiangkai, chairman of XAIC.</p]
The production base for both joint ventures will be in Xi'an in Shaanxi Province.</p]
The first landing gear for Boeing 737 aircraft in China is projected to be produced by the end of the year by the joint venture.</p]
AVIC can further improve its production technology and enter the international market through the JV.</p]

Nov. 14, 2008 (China Knowledge) - Microsoft Corp, the world's top manufacturer of software for personal and business computing, is reportedly planning to invest US$1 billion in its R&amp;D facilities in China over the next three years despite the weary economic situation worldwide, sources reported, citing an unnamed sources, as saying.</p]
However, there is no official comment on this expansion plan. The insider disclosed Microsoft is likely to release the detailed plan as early as Nov. 13.</p]
Besides expanding investment in the R&amp;D sector in Chinese market, Microsoft also mulls outsourcing more business to Chinese software. In 2007, a total of US$100 million worth of outsourcing contracts were given to Chinese software companies and it plans to increase the outsourcing contract value by three times in three years. <br /] <br /] Microsoft's R&amp;D and outsourcing budget for China will both grow in double digits in 2008, according to China Knowledge's earlier report.</p]
In 2006, the U.S. software giant had 500 people in its R&amp;D facility in China and currently the figure rose to 3,000. That issue is on the agenda at the first summit of the so-called BRICs--those three countries plus India. So far, their diverging interests have prevented these four leading emerging economies from acting as an effective bloc. Agricultural trade is just one case in point, where the interests of Brazil's high-tech farmers were at odds with those of China and India's low-tech ones. </P]<P]But the BRICs do want to boost their role as global players and increase their collective weight in international organizations. They see themselves as a counterweight to the developed world's dominance in international economic matters and a leading voice for the developing world. Brazil plans to shift $10 billion of reserves into multicurrency bonds issued by the International Monetary Fund; China $50 billion; and Russia $10 billion.</P]<P]BRICs cover one-fourth of the world's land area and contribute 40% of world population, 15% of world GDP and 42% of global currency reserves.</P]<P]The BRICs may overtake the combined $30.2 trillion GDP of the Group of Seven nations by 2027, according to Jim O'Neill, the Goldman Sachs economist who coined the term in 2001. That is a decade sooner than he originally forecast.</P]<P]BRICs summit is being held June 16 in Yekaterinburg, Russia.
